HOUSTON (Oct. 18, 2010) -Dr. Mauro Ferrari, president and CEO of The Methodist Hospital Research Institute in Houston, recently was honored with a Chinese Academy of Sciences Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists. The Chinese Academy of Sciences, founded in 1949, is China's most prominent academic institution focusing on the natural sciences, and is home to its technological advisory body. As part of the CAS Visiting Professorships Program, accomplished researchers from overseas are invited to participate in research at CAS to strengthen cooperation and exchange of ideas between CAS institutes and international research institutions and universities.
Ferrari is an international expert on biomedical nanotechnology.He has pioneered the use of nanotechnology to discover more effective, safer means of drug delivery, disease diagnostics and regenerative medicine. He led the development of the NCI's program in nanotechnology, which remains the largest nanomedicine program in the world. He has more than 30 U.S. and international patents and has founded multiple startup companies.
In his new role as president and CEO of The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, he will be at the helm of a new 440,000 square foot research building dedicated solely to medical research, and leading over 900 scientists in translational and clinical research.
Ferrari holds a Ph.D in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his doctorate in mathematics from Universita' di Padova in Italy.
Ferrari is the president of theAlliance for NanoHealth and he serves as professor of experimental therapeutics at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and professor of bioengineering at Rice University. He is a fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
