Biography - Saverio LaFrancesca M.D.


Saverio LaFrancesca, M.D, received his graduate degree at the University of Rome in 1985. He trained at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston under the supervision of Dr. Denton Cooley from 1991 to 1994. He trained in Lung transplant in Montreal and he also trained in aortic surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine with Dr. Joseph Coselli. He became Associate Professor at the University of Rome in June 2000 where he was also the Chief of the Cardiovascular Circulatory support Service.

In 2008 he was appointed Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas in Houston and joined the Thoracic Transplant and Mechanical Support Service directed by Dr. OH Frazier at the Texas Heart Institute in July 2008.

In 2010 he became part of the DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center at the Methodist Hospital in Houston. He is currently involved in the surgical treatment of acute and chronic aortic disease, including valve sparing operations. He is also conducting researches in the field of heart and lung transplantation.
Dr. La Francesca's clinical expertise includes Aortic Aneurysms, Cardiovascular Surgery, Heart Transplant, Lung Transplant, Stents, Valvular Heart Disease, Thoracic and Thoracoabdominal Aortic Surgery, Aortic Valve Sparing Surgery, Minimally Invasive Coronary Surgery, Heart and Lung Transplantation, and Mechanical Assist Devices.

His research interest includes Gene Therapy for Heart and Lung Diseases and Medical Applications of Nanotechnology.
