About Gynecologic Cancer
The most common gynecological cancer, uterine cancer, was diagnosed in nearly 44,000 women in 2010 (according to the American Cancer Society). Ovarian cancer - cancer of the ovaries - is diagnosed in approximately 20,000 women annually, often in advanced stages due to its frequent lack of symptoms. Cervical cancer affects the tissue forming the lower opening of the uterus (cervix), and may also not present any symptoms. Regular Pap smears and pelvic examinations make early detection much easier for physicians, often catching cervical cancer before it starts.
Survival rates for cancers of the uterus and ovaries have been steadily increasing each year due to improved diagnosis and treatment options. Also, the development of the first vaccine for HPV - the virus associated with the development of cervical cancer - gives today’s young women a greater chance to avoid cervical cancer in the future.
Our gynecologic oncology services include innovative options such as complex pelvic restoration, hormone therapy and immunotherapy. Find out more about our gynecologic cancer services, including post-treatment services at the Center for Restorative Pelvic Medicine.
