Biography – Wade Fischer, M.D.

Wade Fischer, M.D., is Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of Adult ECMO in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at The Methodist Hospital Medical Center and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital.  Dr. Fischer received his MD at Tulane University School of Medicine in 1987.  After completing his general surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic he did subspecialty training in cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and Maimonides Medical Center.  Dr. Fischer then entered private practice in Houston for 6 years after which he returned to academics at UCLA where he was a fellow in Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support.  He was then recruited to run the Heart Transplant program and start a Ventricular Assist Device program at Via Christi St. Frances Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.  While in Wichita, the Heart Transplant and VAD Programs exceeded national benchmarks for outcomes.  During this time Dr. Fischer was appointed as Chairman of the Section of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at St. Frances. After seven years in Wichita, Dr. Fischer was recently recruited to join the faculty here at the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center.

His primary clinical interests include all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplant and mechanical circulatory support.  His research interests involve new device trials for Bridge to transplant and destination therapy, expanded indications for adult ECMO and the role of the extracellular matrix in reverse remodeling of the myocardium.  In his free time, Dr. Fischer enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, ages 7 and 4 and participates in Ice Hockey and Ironman triathlons.
