Joseph J. Naples, M.D. is Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at The Methodist Hospital and Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Previously, he was Professor and Chairman of Anesthesiology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he held the R.B. Smith, M.D. Professorship in Anesthesiology and an appointment as Professor in the Division of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Naples is a graduate of Youngtown State University in Ohio and the St. Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri. He completed anesthesiology training at what is now Northeastern Ohio University Western Reserve Care Center. Prior to joining The Methodist Hospital, Dr. Naples served on the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio faculty for fifteen years, the last seven of which were as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology. In addition, he served for three years as President of the Medical Dental Staff at University Hospital, and prior to that, as Chief of Anesthesia and Surgical Services at University Hospital.
Dr. Naples is best known for his work in cardiothoracic, vascular and transplantation anesthesia. During his prior tenure at The Methodist Hospital from 1980-1990, he led the Methodist Baylor Anesthesia Team in the development of heart, lung and liver transplantation procedures.
Alfred Groen, M.D.
Vice Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology
Dr. Groen is Chief of the Greater Houston Anesthesiology (GHA) group at the Methodist Hospital. The anesthesia department at The Methodist Hospital contracts with GHA for all the anesthesia services at the Methodist Hospital, except for the cardiovascular services which are provided by physicians of the Methodist Anesthesia Department.
Dr. Groen is a graduate of Leiden University Medical School and received his training in anesthesiology at the University of Texas in Houston and at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland Ohio. Prior to joining the GHA anesthesia group at the Methodist Hospital in 1993 Dr. Groen was a faculty member at the University of Texas in Houston.
Dr. Groen is involved in resident training at the Methodist Hospital in neurosurgical and regional anesthesia. He also has a special interest in anesthesia for liver transplantation.
