Length: 4 weeks
Location: The Methodist Hospital, Houston, TX
Prerequisites: Successful completion of 3rd year surgical clerkship
A 4 week rotation that provides a broad exposure to the evaluation and management of critically ill surgical patients. Students function as sub-interns, becoming integral members of the multidisciplinary ICU team that is lead by a surgical intensivist. Clinical experience will occur in a 31 bed surgical intensive care unit at The Methodist Hospital, a tertiary referral center in the Texas Medical Center.
- Gain experience with monitoring and evaluation of the critically ill surgical patient.
- Provide a broad exposure to fundamental concepts of critical care including ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, fluids and electrolytes, and nutritional support.
Students will participate in the clinical and educational activities of the Surgical Critical Care Service. This includes faculty teaching rounds, conferences, journal club, and all aspects of clinical care provided by the service.
