Biography
William L. Winters, Jr., M.D. is a senior attending staff member at The Methodist Hospital and a clinical cardiologist in the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. He holds the John S. Dunn Foundation Chair for Clinical Cardiovascular Research and Education at The Methodist Hospital. He serves also as the Editor and Chief of the Journal of the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and Director of the recently established The Methodist Hospital Education Institute.
His background includes an undergraduate career at Princeton University, medical school at Northwestern University followed by postgraduate training in Philadelphia at Temple Medical School. There he served as Director of Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center, a General Clinical Research Center, just prior to coming to Houston in 1968.
In 1968 he moved to Houston to join Dr. Don W. Chapman and the “Chapman Group” in the private practice of cardiovascular medicine. He was the first to bring echocardiography to Houston as a diagnostic test in the late 1960’s, and in the late 1970’s he introduced the angioplasty technique in conjunction with Dr. Albert Raizner and Dr. John Lewis. Despite a busy clinical practice he has always found time to teach medical students, residents and fellows, to participate in clinical research, and to serve in leadership at the local and national level. Some of these include: Past President of the medical staff of The Methodist Hospital; President and Founder of the Houston Cardiology Society; President of the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate; Governor for South Texas for the American College of Physician; Governor of the Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology; Chairman of the Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology; and then as President of the American College of Cardiology in 1990–1991. He serves as Emeritus Trustee of the American College of Cardiology and is named Master of the American College of Cardiology.
He remains active in the clinical activities and teaching programs of The Methodist Hospital and the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center.
