The Endocrinology/Diabetes Division at The Methodist Hospital is a collaborative division that specializes in both basic science and clinical research while supporting a top-rate clinical care program. The result is an innovative team that combines pioneering research and high-quality patient care to develop new therapeutic interventions for diabetes, obesity, endocrine and lipid disorders, and their related conditions. At its core, The Methodist Diabetes, Obesity, and Lipids Center of Excellence has comprehensive, Integrated teams of health care experts to provide personalized care for individuals with these healthcare concerns. Its expert physicians also work within the Methodist Transplant Center and Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center to treat complications associated with diabetes and transplant as well as cardiovascular conditions.
The Endocrinology/Diabetes Division most commonly treats:
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Diabetes complications (especially cardiovascular)
- High cholesterol
The division's core science research team, led by Dr. Willa Hsueh, conducts advanced studies on diabetes, including studying how to prevent disease-intensifying changes at the cellular level. The diabetes and metabolic research efforts include a wide range of investigational studies into the mechanisms of diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, tissue damage, and islet cell dysfunction. It also expands upon the legacy of Dr. Michael DeBakey through its diabetes heart program, which works with diabetic patients who experience complications with cardiovascular disease and/or stroke. The Endocrinology/Diabetes Division also helps treat patients undergoing pancreas/islet transplants, and works with the Weight Management Center at the Methodist Diabetes & Metabolism Institute to help patients improve their nutrition and extend their healthy living.
Inpatient and outpatient resources are widely available through the division's consult service and diabetes maintenance program. Its physician-scientists are constantly working to better understand the complications associated with diabetes, obesity and lipid disorders and develop new therapies that advance diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
