Our Approach
At the Methodist J.C. Walter Transplant Center, we’ve built our approach around the idea that a transplant is much more than a surgery. It’s a unique life-giving event whose impact is both deep—affecting the patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual well being—and wide—involving the families and loved ones of donors as well as recipients.
That’s why we’ve assembled a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, coordinators and other specialists around a single mission: to guide our patients through the transplant process in a way that meets all of their needs … and exceeds their expectations.
Transplant Outcomes
Organ transplant statistics show that one key to achieving the best transplant outcomes is experience—the more transplants a center performs each year, the better its outcomes tend to be.
In 2012, the J.C. Walter Transplant Center performed a total of 462 transplants—more than any year in our 50-year history—which included:
- 186 kidney transplants
- 143 lung transplants
- 60 Ventricular assist device (VAD) implants
- 70 liver transplants
- 40 heart and heart-lung transplants
- 21 pancreas and kidney-pancreas transplants
This volume of procedures allows us to achieve some of the best transplant outcomes in the nation, with one-year survival rates that exceed national averages.
