Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center
A team of dedicated stroke specialists cover the spectrum of patient care – including rapid response following stroke; a range of advanced stroke treatments and therapies; rehabilitation services that implement the latest technologies; and community education, outreach and support.
Epilepsy Program
The Epilepsy Program is a Level 4 multi-disciplinary program comprised of physicians from various specialties at The Methodist Neurological Institute and the Methodist Hospital.
Headache Clinic
Our clinic has been evaluating headache patients since December, 1989 and currently follows 1200 patients with different types of headaches.
MDA / ALS Center
Our Center is the first multidisciplinary care center for patients with ALS in the United States. We use a team approach to assist patients with ALS and apply the latest therapies and proactive symptom management in a positive and caring setting.
Concussion Center
The Methodist Concussion Center is the first center of its kind in Houston. The center provides comprehensive services, including diagnosis, treatment and education, to the professional, student and recreational athletes as well as school coaches and athletic trainers.
Nantz National Alzheimer Center
The Nantz National Alzheimer Center (NNAC) provides comprehensive diagnostic, evaluation and treatment for Alzheimer's and related memory disorders. The NNAC is an outpatient clinical service dedicated to care and research for individuals with memory problems and to the support of their families.
Neuro-rehabilitation Center
Our clinic offers advanced, comprehensive motor and cognitive neurorehabilitation to assist patients who have suffered brain or spinal cord injury, or who have neurological disorders.
Parkinson's and Movement Disorders Center
Our clinic is devoted to care and research for patients with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.
Speech and Language Center
The Speech and Language Center (SLC) focuses on disturbances of speech-motor control. The SLC evaluates patients clinically and also engages in research.
Sleep Disorders Program
The Sleep Disorders Program is a multi-disciplinary program comprised of physicians from various specialties at The Methodist Hospital and the Sleep Disorders Center.
Pain Management Center
The Methodist Pain Management Center cares for difficult pain cases. The center provides effective symptom management, functional rehabilitation and improved quality of life for patients suffering from back pain, complex regional pain, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, trigeminal neuralgia, neuropathic pain and pain associated with multiple sclerosis or stroke.

Laboratories

Cerebral Blood Flow Lab
The Collaborative Cerebral Blood Flow Clinical Lab serves patients with a variety of neurological disorders, including stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA).  Physicians use transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound to produce blood flow imaging of the brain.
EMG and Motor Control Laboratory
EMG/NCV and Motor Control Laboratory, staffed by four neurologists, welcomes patients with weakness and numbness.
Muscle and Nerve Histopathology Laboratory
Utilizing the latest and most advanced histology techniques, our laboratory processes and evaluates skeletal muscle and peripheral nerve to aid in diagnosing a number of conditions.

Houston, TX - 10/08/2012 - The Methodist Neurological Institute’s Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center, the largest stroke unit in Houston’s Texas Medical Center, is the first hospital in the United States to receive a comprehensive stroke center certification by DNV Healthcare Inc.

DNV’s Comprehensive Stroke Center certification was recently approved as a nationally-recognized program, and is based on recommendations by the Brain Attack Coalition, American Stroke Association, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Read Entire News Article

 


NFL, NHL, MLB consultant brings concussion expertise to Houston Dr. Kenneth Podell

Methodist Concussion Center adds Dr. Kenneth Podell, neuropsychologist and concussion expert

HOUSTON—(Aug. 27, 2012)—Dr. Kenneth Podell, a neuropsychologist focused on concussion and head injuries, joins the Methodist Concussion Center in Houston as co-director. Podell will also be the team neuropsychologist consultant for the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Dynamo and Rice Athletics.

Podell most recently headed up the division of neuropsychology and served as director of The Sports Concussion Safety Program and co-director of The Concussion Clinic at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. He worked with a team of neuropsychologists in the early 1990’s to develop the ImPACT test, the most widely used computerized test for sports concussions, which is used by the NFL, NHL and MLB, and throughout the world for testing players for concussions. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. Read Entire News Article

The Methodist Neurological Institute has received Laboratory Accreditation status from the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine. As an accredited electrodiagnostic laboratory, Methodist has demonstrated clinical excellence in EDX medicine and confirmed Methodist’s commitment to providing the highest quality health care. Exemplary Status is the highest level of accreditation an EDX laboratory can achieve under AANEM Accreditation Program.
Methodist was one of only two laboratories in Houston to receive this accreditation, which runs through December 31, 2017.

Houston, TX - 5/9/2012 Bryan M. Spann, D.O., Ph.D., adds clinical leadership to Methodist’s Alzheimer’s program

Bryan M. Spann, D.O., Ph.D., a board-certified neurologist specializing in the clinical management of patients with cognitive disorders, has been named clinic director of the Methodist Neurological Institute’s Nantz National Alzheimer Center.

Spann most recently served as medical director of the Memory and Aging Center at the University of Southern California. As clinic director at Methodist, Spann joins a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Gustavo C. Roman, director of the Nantz National Alzheimer Center. Nantz National Alzheimer Center international symposium to focus on vascular clues

Houston, TX - 1/30/2012 Neurologists are seeing more Alzheimer’s patients with diabetes, stroke and obstructive sleep apnea – a link that is being studied as evidence grows about the role vascular factors play in Alzheimer’s disease, according to research published in Stroke.

Medical researchers from around the world will convene in February at The Methodist Hospital in Houston to discuss this worrying trend and other issues involving vascular disease at the Second Annual International Symposium on Vascular Mechanisms in Alzheimer Disease. The meeting is organized by Dr. Gustavo C. Román, director of the Nantz National Alzheimer Center at the Methodist Neurological Institute, and will take place on Feb. 6 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Read Entire News Article
