Dr. Makoto Kawai is Associate Director, Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. His clinical interests include the evaluation of patients with any paroxysmal events including seizures and sleep disorders; the development of evaluation system and database of the daily needs of the patients with epilepsy and sleep disorders, including driving related issues.
Dr. Kawai received his medical degree from Kyoto University School of Medicine in Japan. He completed a two-year Internal Medicine residency at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, an affiliate of Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York, and a residency in Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine where he served as Chief Resident during his final year. He then went on to complete a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at BCM. Dr. Kawai most recently served as Associate Chief, Division of Medical Education at Toyota Memorial Hospital in Japan. He is board certified in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine.
