The Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Program at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital earns accreditation as a clinical hyperbaric medicine facility from the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society. This accreditation demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to patient care and safety in the area of hyperbaric medicine. A team of experts examined staffing and training, equipment installation, operation and maintenance, facility and patient safety, and the standards of care for the Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Program.
This seal of approval recognizes the hospital’s ability to meet the high performance standards required for this accreditation. The Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Program cares for patients with chronic, non-healing wounds. A panel of physicians specifically trained in hyperbaric medicine treats patients using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) which uses high pressure oxygen to heal. Clinically approved indications for HBO are diabetic ulcers, thermal burns, radiation tissue damage, crush injuries and other problem wounds.
“We are extremely proud to have earned this accreditation,” states Boutros Kahla, M.D., Medical Director of the hospital’s Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Program. “This accreditation means our facility and treatment team have completed a comprehensive review and met recognized standards of care in hyperbaric medicine.”
The accrediting organization, The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), was formed in 1967. It is an international nonprofit association serving over 2,000 physicians, scientists, associates and nurses from more than 50 countries in the fields of hyperbaric and dive medicine. The UHMS is an important source of scientific and medical information pertaining to hyperbaric medicine involving hyperbaric oxygen therapy and diving through its bimonthly, peer-reviewed journal, Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, symposia, workshops, books and other publications.
