Dr. Kalina has an extensive career in emergency medicine and disaster response preparedness. He received his first academic appointment in 1997 as a Clinical Instructor of Emergency Medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. While there, he also held the position of Medical Director for the St. Louis Fire Department. During his tenure, he served as the personal physician to Pope John Paul II during his papal visit in 1999, as well as the physician to the National Governors Association during their conference that same year. Before returning to Houston, Dr. Kalina received training in mass casualty mitigation from the Department of Defense, Department of Justice, FEMA, and the U.S. Secret Service.
Dr. Kalina returned to Houston in 2000 and assumed his current positions at Methodist in 2001. He has sat on several committees to write disaster plans, and sat on the Mayor’s Council for Disaster Response. In 2003, Dr. Kalina was asked to chair the Texas Medical Center Disaster Response Committee.
