Joanne Mitchell
Biography
The Methodist Hospital Research Institute ("TMHRI") Office of Technology Transfer ("OTT") helps protect and manage TMHRI's valuable intellectual property and facilitates the transfer of technologies created at TMHRI to the private sector, optimizing overall benefits to the public. The OTT works closely with TMHRI researchers to identify patentable inventions and other intellectual property that may ultimately develop into commercial products and services. The OTT supports the TMHRI mission of conducting groundbreaking translational and clinical research to provide the best possible patient care by developing improved research tools, methods and devices to further advance research as well as promoting the commercialization of new drugs, diagnostics and treatments into the community.
Dr. Mitchell joined TMHRI in July 2009 as the Director, Office of Technology Transfer. She has a B.Sc. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Durham University, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Liverpool University and spent 9 years performing laboratory research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Mitchell started her career in technology transfer by assisting UAB’s Research Foundation before moving to the Office of Technology Ventures at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where she was ultimately appointed as the Interim Director. Prior to joining TMHRI Dr. Mitchell was Associate Director, Intellectual Property at the City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute in Duarte, California.
