In an effort to combat stroke in the Greater Houston area, The Methodist Hospital System hosted the Stride4Stroke 5K Run & Walk on March 7, 2009 at Rice University. Stride4Stroke helped increase stroke awareness as Houston’s only 5K dedicated to this debilitating disease. The Run & Walk was a day of activities for the entire family. Drayton McLane, owner of the Houston Astros, was the honorary chair of the event.
Methodist’s 5K Run & Walk is part of a comprehensive initiative called Taking Strides4Stroke: Community Stroke Awareness Campaign. The goal of the five-year campaign is to create a stroke education program model at Methodist that can be used by other urban hospitals and communities throughout the nation.
All proceeds will benefit the Methodist Neurological Institute and its stroke outreach education which serves all Methodist system hospitals including:
“Texas is one of the 10 states within the nation’s stroke belt,” said Dr. David Chiu, medical director of the Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center. “By educating the public about the signs and symptoms of stroke and the treatment options, we could significantly reduce the impact of stroke.”
