Methodist for 90 years.
The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI), established in 2004, represents a cornerstone of Methodist's future as a nationally recognized academic medical center. TMHRI's mission is to translate scientific discoveries into new treatments for patients. In 2007, TMHRI broke ground on a 440,000 square foot building, scheduled for completion in 2010. Currently, TMHRI occupies 120,000 square feet of space within Methodist, with more than 700 clinical trials under way.
The Methodist Hospital System currently has $1.5 billion in expansion projects, including a 1.5 million square foot outpatient center in the Texas Medical Center, as well as expansions at Methodist Willowbrook and Sugar Land. The Methodist Imaging Center in West Houston and Methodist Breast Imaging Center in Upper Kirby opened in early 2009, and is building a new hospital in West Houston, scheduled for completion in 2010.

Methodist's reputation as a leader in cardiac care, providing comprehensive
services including research, preventive care and education, diagnosis, surgery
and rehabilitation-to provide effective care and treatment for people suffering
from heart disease.

heart surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, who was recognized as the "Father

In 2004, the Methodist Neurological Institute (NI) was created
to advance the discovery of the origins, mechanisms and treatment of neurological
disease and to provide comprehensive care for patients with disorders and injuries
of the brain and spinal cord. The NI houses the practice and research activities
of the departments of neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neurophysiology
and physical medicine & rehabilitation at Methodist.
In 2002, The Methodist Hospital was awarded Magnet status for exceptional nursing, joining a small group of hospitals around the country acknowledged for nursing excellence and superior patient outcomes.
The Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center at the NI is the largest dedicated stroke unit in the Texas Medical Center and designated a certified primary stroke center by The Joint Commission. The Center is a leader in stroke research, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation and recovery. In 2007, The Methodist Hospital System, led by the NI, launched a five year campaign, Taking Strides4Stroke: Community Stroke Awareness Campaign, to promote education and awareness of stroke symptoms, treatment, prevention and research throughout the greater Houston area.
In 1999, Methodist created the 20,000 square foot Methodist Breast Center. The center, designed to offer patients a new standard of service for the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease.
Methodist formed a partnership with Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine to create the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy in 1999. The first program of its kind to combine basic science and clinical research with comprehensive pediatric and adult cell and gene therapy transplant units, the center treats patients with cancer and other genetic diseases.
Radiation oncologists in the Methodist Cancer Center are currently using an unprecedented combination of radiation and gene therapies to not only eliminate the spread of prostate cancer, but also to provide a long-term vaccine against the disease.
In 2007, the Methodist Transplant Center performed its 3,000th transplant. Methodist is the only institution in Houston that transplants all solid organs.
Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education (MITIE), The Methodist Hospital's surgical training center and virtual hospital will provide for ongoing physician education and surgical training in the latest techniques and technologies. MITIE will employ advanced simulators, technical trainers, robotics and image guidance devices, to make possible cutting-edge surgical training in a safe and effective environment.
Diabetes, Obesity and Lipids integrates diabetes, weight management and lipids into a multidisciplinary center focused on becoming a national leader in metabolic syndrome research and management.
Methodist Bone and Joint Center is Houston's leading provider of orthopedic services. From sports medicine to joint replacement, Methodist offers comprehensive diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitative services. Methodist serves as the official health care provider of the Houston Astros, Houston Texans, Houston Dynamo and Rice Athletics.
Methodist Center for Performing Arts Medicine keeps performing artists on stage, with physicians serving as medical directors for Houston Ballet, Houston Symphony and Houston Grand Opera.
