The evolution of quality, patient safety and our understanding of how to effect change in clinical practice present multiple opportunities for improvement. The methodologies for affecting a culture of safety, the tools for measuring quality and the systems needed to support a continuous improvement continue to advance. Healthcare providers are challenged on a daily basis to synthesize all these elements into operations that improve the quality and safety of their patients.

In collaboration with healthcare organizations, physicians are key participants in the drive to improve patient care and safety. This symposium is designed to share current knowledge of the near-term future of quality and patient safety initiatives so that attendees can strategically plan for and take advantage of new developments in this evolving area.

Objectives

  • Outline the role policy and business decisions will play in the future of US healthcare and identify strategies that will maximize provider and organizational performance.
  • Evaluate leadership behaviors and tools of information technology and industrial engineering approaches that support a culture of safety and the improvement of patient care.
  • Outline the transformative changes in U.S. healthcare and performance improvement methodologies, as well as education, for patient safety and quality improvement.
