San Jacinto Methodist Hospital offers a Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Program that works with patients and specially trained physicians to monitor, manage, and treat chronic, non-healing wounds. We understand how difficult it is to live with pain from a wound that will not heal. Non-healing wounds can affect anyone and prevent you from leading an active life.
Research and new technologies are changing the way we treat chronic wounds. More options are available today than ever before such as bio-engineered skin substitutes, specialized dressings and the latest compression wraps.
The Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Program offers state-of-the-art technologies and advanced wound care techniques to effectively treat non-healing wounds.
A wound that has not healed in over a month should not be overlooked. Our program uses a team approach to promote healing. The first step is a thorough assessment by our wound care physician.
How Hyperbaric Therapy Works
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) uses high pressure oxygen to heal. Each session lasts approximately two hours. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical treatment that increases the amount of oxygen in the patient’s blood, allowing oxygen to pass more easily through the plasma into the wounds to heal them. The HBO chamber surrounds patients with 100% oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure. Usually, there is no benefit to increasing the level of oxygen in the body for normal, healthy individuals. People with certain medical conditions do, however, benefit from increased levels of oxygen. Examples are: people with diabetes who have wounds that are slow to heal; people with wounds that haven’t shown improvement in four weeks; certain bone and skin infections; people with radiation injuries; and people with compromised or failing skin grafts or flaps.
Treatment Team
Our program’s highly trained clinicians create a treatment plan that includes all care providers such as specialty surgeons or family physicians. Treatment is designed to work with primary or a referring physician’s care, not replace it. Physicians affiliated with our program are highly specialized in wound care. Nurses have been extensively trained in treating chronic non-healing wounds.
