Community Outreach

What: Improving Community Education through speaking engagements to the public. Interested nurses would sign up for times when they could volunteer to speak about topics related to improving cardiovascular health. After a Methodist nurse has presented, a follow up presentation with a physician will occur approximately 3 months post in order to further educate the public regarding services offered at MDHVC.

Why: To improve education to the community and provide information to the public about our services. This will also assist in personal satisfaction and growth for the nursing staff.

How: Utilizing current resources within TMH to coordinate and set up the events with coordination from IT, Marketing and the MDHVC education taskforce as well as collaborative efforts with Nursing Administration and Physician faculty members.

Objectives

  • Educate the community on health related topics.
  • Raise awareness among the public on the services and expertise Methodist offer to ensure Methodist is in their consideration set when they choose a health care provider.

Goals

  • Conduct at least two presentations each month.
  • Methodist physicians and nurses will participate.
  • Receive feedback from all presentation attendees through the use of an evaluation form.
  • Respondents say they would recommend Methodist for themselves and/or others on evaluation.

Target Audience

Individuals 50-70 years of age, physically and mentally active that are within the 8 county metro area excluding Sugar Land, Willowbrook and San Jacinto immediate areas. Potential venues include active retirement communities, health clubs and community events.

Responsibilities of Speaker

  • Using one of the prepared PowerPoint presentations, practice accordingly and be prepared for FAQ.
  • Presentation will be 20-30 minutes in length, followed by up to 15 minutes of Q/A.
  • Speaker will pick up and return laptop, projector, promotional materials, and evaluation forms From El Rio location and return materials and forms the next business day.
  • Speaker will arrive at presentation location 30 minutes prior to presentation to set up projector and promotional materials.
  • Speaker will pass out and collect evaluation forms from event attendees.

Responsibilities of Speaker's Bureau Coordinator

  • Research potential speaker opportunities to present to target audience (community organizations, retirement communities, etc); 25 attendee minimum for each presentation.
  • Coordinator will locate speaker for presentation no more than 10 days after initial request is sent by Speaker's Bureau Coordinator, or coordinator will contact physician offices to secure speaker.
  • Review PowerPoint presentation in a timely manner.
  • Provide promotional materials for speaker to bring to presentation; Will be provided by marketing managers and will be available for pick up at El Rio location least 3 days before presentation.
  • Reserve projector and (if needed) laptop for presentation.
  • Read and make appropriate changes based on feedback provided in evaluation forms.

Logistics/Timeline

  • 1 Week Prior to Presentation: Speaker sends presentation to Speaker's Bureau Coordinator for review.
  • 3 Days to 1 Week prior to presentation: Speaker's Bureau Coordinator will reserve laptop and projector if speaker is unable to secure their own.
  • 3 Days to 1 Week prior to presentation: Provide address and contacts at location to presenter.
  • 3 Days Prior to presentation: Marketing Managers provide promotional materials for speaker.
  • 1 Day before presentation: Speaker will pick up laptop, projector, promotional materials, and evaluation from coordinator.
  • 1 Day following presentation: Speaker will return laptop, projector, extra promotional items, and evaluations to coordinator.
