Program Overview

This activity will examine the latest scientific advances in the field of thoracic organ transplant medicine, as well as provide an overview and exploration of emerging clinical technologies and treatment trends. Expert speakers will present cutting–edge clinical advances, current best practices and center management solutions in this specialized area of health care. Successful implementation of thoracic transplant procedures is dependent on acquiring knowledge from experts in the field, applying principles of a team-based approach to an individual's practice, and specialized assessment. This course will also explore the theoretical, practical, and ethical aspects surrounding the evolving science of thoracic organ transplantation.

Target Audience

Cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, transplant surgeons, nurses, perfusionists.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Determine optimal methodology for donor organ preservation
  • List the current approaches to managing a thoracic transplant and assist device program
  • Identify the latest operative techniques for thoracic transplantation
  • Desribe developments in mechanical circulatory support and long term devices
  • Duplicate developments in mechanical circulatory support and long term devices
  • Describe treatment strategies for right heart failure following assist device placement
  • Identify new techniqes in perioperative management of thoracic transplant patients
  • Describe newly developed technologies for heart and lung support
