Indications for Referral for Cancer Genetics Consultation

NOTE:

  • Cancer cases must all be on the same side of the family
  • FDR = first degree relative (parents, siblings, children)
  • SDR = second degree relative (grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles)

Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome

One or more of the following:

  • Breast cancer at younger than age 50
  • Ovarian cancer at any age in patient or FDR
  • Breast and ovarian cancer in same patient or a FDR at any age
  • Two or more breast primaries in patient or FDR
  • 2 or more cases of breast cancer in FDRs or SDRs if one is younger than age 50 or bilateral
  • 3 or more cases of breast or ovarian cancer in FDRs and SDRs at any age
  • Male breast cancer at any age
  • Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry and any of the following:
    • Breast cancer at younger than age 50
    • Ovarian cancer or male breast cancer at any age
    • 2 or more cases of breast cancer and/or ovarian cancer in FDRs or SDRs
    • BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation identified in family

How can I refer my patient for a consult?

  1. Review the indications criteria listed above with your patient
  2. If your patient meets the criteria, have your patient call 713-441-PINK (7465) for more information and/or to schedule an appointment
  3. The Genetic Counselor will consult with the patient and you will receive a follow-up letter summary upon completion.
Genetic counseling appointments are available each 1st and 3rd Wednesday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
