Cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and stroke, claims the lives of more women than all forms of cancer.
One in two women in the United States will die of coronary heart disease or stroke compared to one in 25 women who will die from breast cancer. CHD, also known as the "silent epidemic," affects one in nine women over the age of 45 and once women reach the age of 50, their chances for heart disease increases significantly.
Despite the statistics, women still fear cancer over heart disease. Too few women realize the dangers of heart disease and how it can affect them. The Methodist DeBakey Heart Center and Methodist Wellness Services are committed to improving women's health and dedicated to prevention, early detection and the treatment of CHD. Doctors and nurses knowledgeable in the field of CHD provide extensive health information and guidance to our patients. Their expertise encompasses cardiovascular disease, preventive medicine and primary care.
The Coronary Risk Profile for Women was developed in response to the lack of awareness and recognition by women and health care providers that heart disease is the leading killer of women. The service specifically designed for women educates women on heart disease and defines their individual risk for developing the disease.
