Neuropathology in Research

The Neuropathology Service banks nervous tissue samples, adding to the Neurological Institute’s knowledge base and fueling ongoing research aimed at understanding the causes and effects of neurological illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases.

Neuropathology is a subspecialty of anatomical pathology that focuses on the study of nervous tissue. Within the Methodist Neurological Institute, physicians in the Neuropathology Service act as consultants to other physicians — often in cases in which neurological disease is suspected but cannot be confirmed.  In such cases, biopsies are performed and the tissue is sent to a neuropathologist for a comprehensive examination, including electron microscope examination if necessary to gather the information required to confirm diagnosis.
