Neurological Nursing

Nursing Legacy

The Neuronursing Program within the Neurological Institute was initiated in the early 1980s by two outstanding neuroscience nurses who first worked to define the special skills and knowledge required for successful neuroscience nursing, and then developed an effective program for training nurses to meet the particular demands of neurological patients.

Today, the Neuronursing program is distinguished by a commitment to ongoing education, mentorship and leadership development — together helping to strengthen professional retention and the wealth of experiential knowledge it enables.

Requiring extensive additional skills, knowledge and abilities in addition to traditional nursing practices, neuronursing provides highly specialized care to patients suffering from neurological disorders. Apart from keeping the entire care team apprised of patient status, progress and needs, nurses within the Methodist Neurological Institute have a voice in decision-making at all levels of patient care. Their role is vital to preserving the safety of our patients, which is contingent upon interdisciplinary collaboration in the care delivery process. This collaboration also supports positive patient outcomes.

The Neurological Institute is committed to evidence-based nursing practice, with scholarly research, controlled studies, and the timely dissemination of research findings all contributing to the advancement of the Neuronursing Service. Neuronursing is an integral part not only of ensuring the best patient care, but also in ensuring the success of the institute as a whole.
