Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get this process started?
The first step is to learn about your options. One easy way to do this is to register and attend the weight loss surgery orientation. This is a FREE session offered by The Methodist Hospital Weight Management Center in Houston, TX.
What weight loss surgeries does Methodist offer?
Our surgeons perform the two weight loss surgeries approved by the National Institutes of Health: the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RNY), the LAP-BAND®, and the Gastric Sleeve. Our surgeons are skilled in performing these surgeries using the laparascopic method, and will work with you on an individual basis to determine the best solution for you.
Can I have surgery at Methodist if I am from a different city or state?
We do our best to help every patient who comes to us for weight loss. The bariatric surgery team will decide the best route depending on a patient's medical history and the level of care available in his or her home community. Out-of-town patients should expect a 3-7 day stay in Houston for surgery.
Will my insurance cover surgery for weight loss?
Many insurance companies provide coverage for weight loss surgery. The exact benefits and requirements vary tremendously among insurance companies and by policies within companies. Methodist can assist you in finding out if your insurance company and policy provides benefits. However, having benefits does not mean that you are approved for the surgery. Insurance companies are very specific regarding qualifications and requirements for the surgery. Our surgeons’ office staff members are very familiar with the requirements of the various insurance companies and will guide you on the process and required documentation.
